Frequently Asked Questions
General
- What is RougePages?
- RougePages is the best way to find out what's going on in Baton Rouge. It's a growing guide to events, bands, organizations, venues, and businesses. With your help, it can become even better.
- Who's behind all this?
- RougePages was started by Jason and Matthew in early 2004. Jason's brother Michael helped a lot in late 2004 and early 2005. Now, Jason works in the community and Michael's off with the Peace Corps, so Matthew runs most of the site.
- Doesn't Matthew have a day job, too? What a slacker.
- Sure he does. But it's in web development, so he can usually keep an eye on RougePages throughout the day.
- Does this site make money?
- We don't make much. But we make enough to run the site and make upgrades when necessary.
- But I thought RougePages was free to use!
- It is. And free to promote your events, too. We make some money through Google ads and local businesses and organizations advertising. If you're interested in advertising, by the way, drop us a line.
- So why do it, if it's not making you rich?
- One: we find it useful, and hope you do, too. Two: we want to promote Baton Rouge's cultural community. Three: it's kinda fun.
- I have a suggestion/question/request for you.
- Excellent! We want to hear it. Please contact us about it. We especially like to hear feature requests. We want to know how to make RougePages more useful for you.
Design
- Wow. This place looks different. What happened?
- You're looking at an all-new design. We've learned a lot since we started up RougePages, and we decided it was time to streamline RougePages to be even more useful. You'll notice new sections for information on locations and attractions, an all-new event editor, and user accounts where you can create your own calendars.
- I like the new features.
- Thanks. We worked hard on them. We'd love to to hear more.
- It doesn't look very pretty.
- Exactly. We're here to provide you with the best local information, not deliver a stunning piece of web-based artwork. Heavy graphics can make the site sluggish, and we think you want your information quickly.
- Does that mean you don't care about how your website looks?
- Not at all! We've pride ourselves on having a website that's easy to use and information that's easy to find. Lots of care went into the layout: we wanted to present our information in the most accessible way possible.
- But seriously! You don't even have a logo!
- One day, we might. We just don't have a third of a million dollars to spend on pretty graphics. We think having good information is more important, and we hope that you do, too. That's why you're here, right?
Events
- Hah! I know about an event that you don't have online! I'm smarter than your website.
- Good for you! Why not let other's share in your knowledge and post the event?
- Some of the information here looks wrong.
- Please let us know and we'll change it. Better yet, if it's wrong information about you, we can give your account permission to edit it.
- My friends and I only go to Venue X.
- We encourage you to explore more of what the city has to offer. But if you insist, try going to Venue X's location page. You can find a link to it on our location listing.
- I absolutely adore Band Y and want and never want to miss them in when they're playing in Baton Rouge.
- Go to Band Y's page and add them to your calendar. It will automatically add their events whenever a new one is created. You can even have us send you email alerts to let you know when an event is coming up.
- Nifty!
- You're welcome.
- Can I export my calendar to Outlook or iCal? How about an RSS feed?
- Not yet. We think these features would be really cool, but we can't spend the time developing them if no one uses them. If you would use them, please let us know.
Submitting Events
- I have a(n) event / gig / performance / fundraiser / tiddlywinks tournament coming up. Can I put my event on your website?
- If your event is open to the public and in the Baton Rouge area, then yes! Just go to our event editor and fill out the information.
- What if I just put you on my groups mailing list? Will you enter all the information for me?
- Unfortunately, we at RougePages are constrained by Day Jobs and Real Lives. We'd love nothing more than to spend all day filling the RougePages calendar, but alas we also have only 24 hours in a day.
- I put an event on your website way back in the day. It took about 90 seconds, and that's way too long for me.
- You're in luck! With our slick new event editor, you can have your event online in about 30 seconds.
- My event recurs every Tuesday and Thursday. Do I have to enter each date and time individually?
- Try playing with the calendar. You can get a dozen dates entered in seconds (cut and paste can come in handy for the times, too).
- I know there's supposed to be a calendar on your event editor, but I don't see it.
- Chances are that you have Javascript turned off. You can still enter events, but you can only use existing locations and attractions, and only one date per event.
- How do I turn Javascript on?
- It's different for each browser. Consult your help files, or play around in "Internet Options" until you find it.
- I posted my event, but I don't see it in the listing. Did I do something wrong?
- Probably not. You're pretty smart, after all. We just need to review events before they go live on our listing.
- What's all this about approving events? Don't you trust me?
- Of course we do. We just don't want any malicious characters wasting your time by posting fake events online.
- How long does it take to approve an event?
- About a day. Sometimes less, if Matthew's near a computer when it happens (and since he telecommutes, that's pretty often).
- Whoops! I accidently listed my charity fundraiser price as "Free" when it should be "$99.95". Should I email you?
- You can. We'd love to hear from you. But better yet, if you were signed in when you posted the event, you can just go to your homepage (under My RougePages), click on the event you want to edit, and make the changes yourself.
- Do I need to create an account to submit an event?
- Nope. But you can only come back and edit your event later if you have an account. After all, we can't let just anyone go in and monkey with your event. We need to make sure it's really you.
- I'm the event coordinator for Nightclub X. Can I go in and edit all the events posted for Nightclub X?
- Sure, but you need to have your account linked to Nightclub X first. Email us and let us know, and we'll do that for you.
- I'm the drummer for Rock Band Y. Can I edit all the events for my band?
- Of course. Just email us and let us know who you are. We'll link your account to your band/organization/group.
Accounts
- Do I have to have an account to use the site?
- Not at all! If you don't want to sign up, that's fine. You won't hurt our feelings. Much. The website is open to the public.
- Then why should I bother making an account?
- There are a couple of benefits. First, you can create a personalized calendar with all the events you want to go to. You can print this out or have us email you to remind you that something is coming up. Second, if you submit events while logged in, you can go back and edit those events later. Third, we occasionally give away free stuff to people for doing things like submitting lots of events, telling their friends about RougePages, or going out and supporting the Baton Rouge artistic community.
- Free stuff, eh? How do I get my hands on this aforementioned free stuff?
- When we have an upcoming content or giveaway, we'll put all the relevant information on the website. If you want, we can even send you an email telling you about it.
- Do you want lots of personal information when I sign up? Like my favorite color or my first crush?
- No, that's ok. The only thing we need is a valid email address and password. You don't even have to tell us your name if you don't want to. But we'd appreciate knowing who you are.
- You need my email address? Does that mean you're going to spam me?
- Only if you want us to. Just kidding. If you want, we'll send you nothing. You can also choose to have us send you important announcements, like upcoming contests, or remind you about events on your calendar.
- Are you sure you're not going to spam me?
- Positive. We hate spam, too. If you decide at any time that you don't want any more email, just go to your account page and change your preferences.
- Well, are you going to give my name to any of those so-called "Third Parties"?
- Of course not. See our Privacy Policy for more information.
